Guard Promotions

Ensuring that ensembles are placed in the correct competitive class is essential to maintaining fairness and fostering the educational growth of the performers. Promotion reviews can be requested by adjudicators at the conclusion of an event and/or be automatically triggered if an ensembles receives a score at or above the review scale (see below). When required, the recently formed Guard Promotion Committee will independently review potential promotions.

Review Triggers

There are two ways an ensemble could tigger a review:

  • The adjudication panel can request a review at the conclusion of an event, and/or

  • The ensemble receives an overall score at or above the Automatic Review Scale

Automatic Review Scales

Understanding that different classes have different sheets, criteria, and expectations, MAC has a sliding scale that is used to determine appropriate review triggers. This scale increases in score each week to align with anticipated improvement.

This review scale is assessed each year against the prior three years to ensure contemporaneous accuracy against sheets, and may be updated based upon that assessment prior to the start of a new season.

Promotion Review

If a review is requested and/or automatically triggered, the Promotion Committee will independently review the latest performance of the ensemble to determine if the ensemble should remain in their current class or be promoted to the next higher class. If a Guard Director does not submit a video within a 24 hour period of notification for review, the ensemble will automatically be promoted to the next higher class.

If the ensemble is promoted, they will perform in their new class beginning at their next scheduled performance. If the ensemble is not promoted, they will remain in their current class. Regardless of promotion outcome, the ensemble will still be eligible for additional promotion reviews during the season.
